Dhaka, Bangladesh (BBN)- At least 11 people were killed and 50 others injured as landslides and storms, triggered by the cyclonic storm 'Roanu', hit Bangladesh’s coastal areas on Saturday.
Of the dead, four were reported from Chittagong while three from Noakhali, two from Bhola, and one each from Patuakhali and Laxmipur districts.
Besides, four people went missing as two sand-laden cargoes sank in the Meghna River in Ilisha of Bhola’s Sadar upazila during the heavy rains on Saturday morning, according to a local police official said.
Several hundred houses, business establishments and shops were damaged while many trees and electric poles uprooted, ponds and fish enclosures washed away and several thousands of people got marooned due to flood triggered by the storms in different coastal districts, according to reports.
In capital Dhaka, rains, caused by the cyclonic storm, swamped many parts of the capital, living the city life in disarray.
Roads in Kakrail, Mouchak, Malibagh, Mirpur, Kazipara, Shewrapara, Motijheel, Shantinagar, Razarbagh, Arambagh, Merul Badda, Elephant Road, Dhanmondi and Paltan areas were submerged, as the city's clogged drains failed to absorb the rainwater.
