Dhaka, Bangladesh (BBN) - The main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) enforces dawn-to-dusk general strike in the capital on Sunday to protest the split of Dhaka City Corporation (DCC) into two parts.
Jamaat-e-Islami and other like minded political parties have extended their support to the shutdown program.
Parliament passed Local Government (City Corporation) Act (Amendment) Bill 2011 on November 29 to divide DCC into North and South parts.
Around 10,000 police personnel will be deployed in the city during Sunday`s dawn-to-dusk strike to ensure safety of lives and wealth in the capital Dhaka.
Besides, plain clothes detective police will also be in place and will be on high alert along with still and video cameras to frame trouble makers during the strike hours.
Police have remained on high alert from Saturday noon in different intersections and important areas to avert any pre-strike unpleasant incident.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Benazir Ahmed said `foolproof security` measure has been taken to ensure safety of the city dwellers.
He called upon trouble mongers to refrain from any destructive activities in the name of strike.
