Dhaka, Bangladesh (BBN)– The countrywide dawn-to-dusk general strike enforced by opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) protesting the ‘eviction’ of its Chairperson Khaleda Zia from her Dhaka Cantonment residence, is going on with a few incidents of violence in Dhaka on Sunday.

BNP Secretary General Khandaker Delwar Hossain announced the general strike at a press briefing held at the party’s Naya Paltan central office in the capital Dhaka Saturday.

BNP activists brought out a procession in front of the party central office at about 10:30am. Police lobbed two teargas shells and charged batons on the activists to disperse them, according to reports.

A huge contingent of police has been deployed around the party office to maintain law and order situation in the area.

The vehicular movements are thin on the city streets. All educational institutions and business establishments remain closed in the capital following the strike.
