Dhaka, Bangladesh (BBN) – A Hong Kong-based garment factory inside Dhaka Export Processing Zone (DEPZ) suspended production for an indefinite period on Sunday amid workers’ protest, the police said.

The authorities of Goldtex BD Limited of the DEPZ closed the factory following demonstrations and protest by workers since on Thursday to press home their 12-point demand, an officer of Ashulia Police Station said.

Nearly 3,000 workers of the garment factory have been observing work abstention inside the unit for the last several days, demanding double payment for working on holidays, transport facilities and lunch stipend and other financial benefits, witnesses said.

The workers turned angry Sunday morning after seeing the indefinite closure notice at the main gate of the factory while they went to join their duty in the morning, they added.

The infuriated workers tried to take their movement outside the DEPZ but failed due to the immediate intervention of law enforcers who dispersed the agitators with a promise of taking effective measures to resolve the crisis.
