Dewan Farid Gazi passes away

Dhaka, Bangladesh (BBN)- Ruling Awami League Lawmaker Dewan Farid Gazi died of old-age complications at Square Hospital in the capital Dhaka early on Friday.

Gazi, also a Awami League Advisory Council member and chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on the Ministry of Primary and Mass Education, breathed his last at about 5:40am (local time) at the age of 86.

He was born in Devpara in Nabiganj upazila in 1924, left behind his five sons, 2 daughters, friends and a host of relatives to mourn his death.

Gazi was elected lawmaker in 1996, 2001 and in 2008 from Habiganj-1 constituency (Nabiganj and Bahubal upazilas).

He was a close aide of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and one of the main organizers of the War of Liberation in 1971.
