Metro Rail likely to run on Fridays

Dhaka Metro Rail to Resume From Sunday

Last updated: August 20, 2024

Dhaka, Bangladesh (BBN) - Dhaka Metro Rail service is expected to resume from Sunday as the agitating employees of Dhaka Mass Transit Company Ltd (DMTCL) have returned to work.

The trains will not stop at the vandalised Mirpur-10 and Kazipara stations, according to a press release of Road Transport and Bridges Ministry.

Employees in grades 10 to 20 returned to work on Tuesday after the DMTCL board accepted their demand for a salary hike, officials said, adding that the board also formed a committee to address their demand for the payment of arrears.

Meanwhile, Md Ehsanul Haque, senior secretary of roads and highways department, visited the Bangladesh Secretariat Metro Rail Station in the capital Dhaka this morning.

Even after metro rail services resume, operations of Kazipara and Mirpur-10 stations will be closed for the time being due to the need for repair and renovation, according to the secretary.

MAN Siddique, managing director of DMTCL, and officials of the ministry were present.

DMTCL, established in 2013, began recruiting staff in 2019 and now employs over 700 individuals trained both domestically and internationally to operate and maintain the city's first metro rail along the Uttara-Motijheel corridor.

Earlier on August 18, Interim Government's Road Transport and Bridges Adviser Muhammad Fauzul Kabir Khan said Dhaka Metro Rail service will resume within maximum seven day.

Operations of metro rail have remained suspended since July 18 after two stations -- Mirpur-10 and Kazipara -- were vandalised during the quota reform protests, which later turned into an uprising that toppled the Sheikh Hasina-led government on August 5.
