Dhaka stocks gain, Singer rises by 32.56 percent

Dhaka, Bangladesh (BBN)- All the indices and turnover in the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) gained on Wednesday although major part of the trading session see-sawed, market operators said.

The benchmark DSE General Index (DGEN) ended at 6,411.92, registering 1.48 per cent rise or 93.77 points.

The broader DSE All Shares Price Index (DSI) rose 77.82 points or 1.49 per cent to 5,307.40. The DSE-20 index including blue chips gained 1.28 per cent or 51.86 points to 4115.29.

The total turnover increased to BDT 13.43 billion, in value term, up by 16.7 percent from the previous session's BDT 11.51 billion, according to the DSE data.

All major sectors gained substantially on the day except banking sector and mutual fund sector, as market witnessed late buying pressure from the investors. Insurance sector emerged as the gainer of the day.

All sectors closed higher on the day except for banks. Banks, the largest sector in the market, fell by 0.74 percent, while general insurance, life insurance and cement rose by 7.04 percent, 5.18 percent and 4.74 percent respectively.

A total of 122.67 million shares changed hands on the day which were 102.36 million in the previous session. The trade deals also increased and stood at 236,036 against 212,339 in the previous session.

The gainers took strong lead over the losers as out of 256 issues traded, 214 issues advanced, only 37 issues declined and five issues remained unchanged.

The market capitalization slightly increased and stood at BDT 2,870.11 billion which was BDT 2,835.86 billion of the previous day.

Singer Bangladesh was the day's highest gainer posting 32.56 percent rise following its attractive corporate declaration. The company recommended 600 per cent final cash and 75 per cent stock dividends for the year that ended on December 31, 2010.

It was followed by Sinobangla Industries, Prime Insurance, CMC Kamal, Keya Detergents, City General Insurance, Fu-Wang Food, Peoples Insurance, Karnaphuli Insurance and Fine Foods.

Beximco Limited topped the turnover leader with shares worth Tk 645.09 million changed hands. The other turnover leaders were Singer Bangladesh, Maksons Spinning, Bextex Limited, Peoples Leasing, Aftab Automobiles, United Airways, Confidence Cement, Golden Sons and Keya Cosmetics.
