Dhaka, Bangladesh (BBN)– Dhaka stocks returned to positive on Thursday after closing almost flat of the previous day, market operators said.

The benchmark DSE General Index (DGEN) rose 86.55 points or 1.34 per cent to close 6,540.60, as turnover hit two-week high amid an influx of new investors.

The broader All Shares Price Index (DSI) closed at 5,424.38, rising 71.38 points or 1.33 per cent. The DSE-20 index comprising blue-chip shares rose 38.28 points or 0.95 per cent to end at 4031.60.

Among the sectors, insurers gained almost across the board, with general insurance climbing 3.31 per cent and life insurance 3.35 per cent. Of the 44 insurance issues traded on the day, 41 gained and three lost.

Telecommunications advanced 3.92 per cent, medicine makers 1.81 per cent, fuel and power 1.28 and banks 0.94 per cent.

Turnover rose 47.61 percent to BDT 12.09 billion, the highest since March 21 this year. Market capitalization stood at BDT 2,920.33 billion (US$40.84 billion), up from BDT 2,881.13 billion in the previous session.

A total of 86.16 million shares changed hands on the day against 58.67 million in the previous session. Trade deals also increased to 224,579 against Wednesday’s 159,307.

Beximco Limited topped the turnover chart with turnover value of BDT 385.36 million.

The market mood was buoyant right from the start, largely defying the submission of the stock scam probe report by a committee headed by former Bangladesh Bank deputy governor Khondker Ibrahim Khaled.
