Dhaka, Bangladesh (BBN) – Dhaka stocks continued to surge on Thursday with the turnover value crossing BDT 10-billion mark for the first time in 2012 as investors went for fresh buying binge.
 
Market insiders said that participation of investors increasing in recent days amid growing confidence of investors which contributed higher turnover value.
 
The market started the day with a strong note and the momentum continued until the closure, as the investors went for fresh buying.
 
The benchmark General Index of the Dhaka Stock Exchange— (DGEN), the main gauge of the market, ended at 5,343.59, rising 116.98 points or 2.23 percent. The DGEN has crossed 5,300 level for the first time since January 8, 2012.
 
Most of the issues traded on the day advanced. As out of 263 issues traded, 182 advanced, 69 declined and 12 remained unchanged.
 
The turnover value stood at BDT 10.78 billion against BDT 8.51 billion in the previous session, which was more than eight-month high since July 31, last year. On July 31, last year turnover value was recorded BDT 13.41 billion.
 
Grameenphone (GP) continued to top the turnover chart with shares worth BDT 513.71 million changing hands.
 
The other turnover leaders were Meghna Petroleum, Titas Gas, Jamuna Oil, MI Cement, Beximco Limited, Square Pharma, Peoples Leasing, LankaBangla Finance and MJL BD.
 
First Bangladesh Shilpa Rin Sangstha Mutual Fund was the day’s highest gainer posting a rise of 9.98 per cent while Bay Leasing was the worst loser.
Similarly, the Chittagong Stock Exchange (CSE) yardstick, CSCX, also gained 242.81 points to close at 10020.81 at the end. 
The port city bourse showed a gain of 29.55 points on Wednesday while 245.79 points on Tuesday though it slipped 13.13 points on Monday.
Of the issues traded at the CSE, 128 advanced, 50 suffered losses and 21 remained unchanged.
The Chittagong bourse also recorded higher turnover with BDT 898.30 million as against BDT 740.10 million recorded on Wednesday and BDT 765.90 million on Tuesday.
