Dhaka, Bangladesh (BBN) – The Dhaka University authorities on Saturday withdrew expulsion order against Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman from the university after 61 years
The decision was taken at a special meeting of the syndicate with Vice-Chancellor Prof AAMS Arefin Siddique in the chair.
After the syndicate meeting, Prof. Arefin told reporters that all the 14 members present at the syndicate meeting unanimously agreed to withdraw the expulsion order.
The university authorities had expelled Bangabandhu and four other students without issuing any show-cause notices. But, there were strong grounds behind the movement by the employees, he said, adding that the expulsion order was undemocratic and unjust.
The fourth class employees of Dhaka University went for indefinite strike to press for their demands on March 3, 1949. Student bodies also expressed their solidarity with the employees’ demands and joined the movement.
The students led by Sheikh Mujibur Rahman went for class abstention. After holding a full-day strike on March 5 under the banner of East Pakistan Muslim Chhatra League, the DU students held a rally from where the students declared to continue the movement along side the employees.
The Dhaka University authorities being directed by the provincial government punished 27 students on different terms. The University authorities fined five students with BDT 15. Sheikh Mujib was one of these five students.
The authorities also asked the five students to make written promise to their provosts that they would not do such “unruly” activities in future, which was a condition to get back their studentship.
Except Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib, the four other students paid the fine and retained their studentships by making written promising to the authorities.
