Dhaka, Bangladesh (BBN) -Nobel laureate Dr Muhammad Yunus will be the chief adviser of the upcoming interim government, said a press statement of Bangabhaban Tuesday midnight.
The decision came following a meeting among Bangladesh President Mohammed Shahabuddin, heads of three armed forces and the representatives of Anti-Discrimination Students Movement at Bangabhaban tonight.
Asif Nazrul and Tanjim Uddin, two professors of the Dhaka University, also attended the meeting, President's press wing confirmed.
Earlier around 6:00pm, a microbus carrying a 13-member team of the student movement entered the Bangabhaban, the official residence of Bangladesh president.
The country is facing uncertainty after the resignation of Sheikh Hasina from the position of prime minister of Bangladesh. Hasina stepped down and fled the country yesterday following the countrywide demonstration carried out by the students. She is now in India, as Indian sources confirmed.
Hasina's resignation came following around three weeks of violence that had its origin in the students' demand for reforming quota system in public service jobs.
Between July 16 and August 6, several hundreds of people have been killed during massive protests, violent clashes, mayhem, torching and vandalism.
On July 23, the government through a circular reformed the quota system as per the demand of the students, but the deaths fuelled the demonstration that erupted across the country leading to a one-point demand -- ‘the resignation of PM’ -- as the demonstrators held Hasina’s government responsible for the deaths.
Eventually, Hasina stepped down on Monday, in a space of three days of the beginning of one-point movement.
Hasina came to power as PM in 2009 for second term and ruled for over 15 years. Earlier, she served as the PM of Bangladesh from 1996 to 2001.
