Dhaka, Bangladesh (BBN) – The government and the World Bank is implementing the US$149 million ‘Dhaka Water Supply and Sanitation Project (DWSSP)’ to improve delivery of storm water drainage, wastewater and water services to the population of Dhaka.
The project is working to install selected storm water pumping stations and rehabilitate selected canals to help improve drainage and minimize urban flooding. The project would also repair and expand priority investments in the city’s sewerage network and treatment plant. The project also aims to support DWASA to pilot water and sanitation services into selected Dhaka slums for the first time.
As the project faced initial delays and some implementation constraints,   progress and fund disbursement rate has been low. After a review of the project, the Government of Bangladesh and the World Bank team decided to restructure the project in order to bring implementation back on track.
The project restructuring, with an extension of the project closing date, will allow the stormwater pumping stations to be completed and other key project activities – including the Drainage Master Plan, the remaining canal rehabilitation works, the redesign and preparation of a comprehensive strategy for Low Income Communities water supply and sanitation services, and key Dhaka Water Supply and Sewerage Authority (DWASA) institutional strengthening initiatives – to be finalized within the extension period.
