Dhaka, Bangladesh (BBN) - The holy Eid-e-Miladunnabi was observed in Bangladesh on Sunday with religious fervour and due solemnity commemorating the birth and demise of Great Prophet Hazrat Muhammad (PBUH) on this day in the month of Rabiul Awal 1,441 years ago.
On this day (the 12th of Rabiul Awal of the Hijri calendar) in 570 AD, Muhammad was born in Makkah of Saudi Arabia with divine blessings and messages of peace for humankind.
He passed away on the same day in 632 AD.
In the capital Dhaka, thousands of people paraded the city thoroughfares in colourful marches as part of the celebration as devotees belonging to different spiritual centres organized rallies marking the day.
Muslims across the country joined special prayers, discussions and gave alms to the underprivileged marking. The day was public holiday. All public and private offices, businesses and private organizations remained closed.
President Zillur Rahman, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Leader of the Opposition Khaleda Zia in separate messages wished peace and welfare for all including the Muslim Ummah on the occasion.
The city streets were decorated with colourful flags and banners while Bangladesh Television, Bangladesh Betar and private television channels and radio stations aired special programs while newspapers published supplements highlighting significance of the day.
Islamic Foundation has already announced a fortnight-long program at Baitul Mukarram National Mosque on the occasion of Miladunnabi.
The programs included a series of discussions for 15 consecutive days on the life and ideals of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) at the national mosque after Maghreb prayers alongside special Milad Mahfils and a book fair.
