Last updated: November 28, 2012
Dhaka, Bangladesh (BBN)- European Union (EU) has expressed profound shock at the loss of lives in a garment factory fire incidence in Ashulia and extended condolences to the families of victims on the national mourning day.
"We were greatly saddened to hear of the appalling incident at a garment factory in Ashulia on Saturday. We deplore the loss of so many young lives and we extend our deepest condolences to the families of the victims on this national mourning day," local EU Heads of Missions said in a statement.
While the EU recognizes the importance of readymade garments in Bangladesh economy, and appreciate that the European market is the largest export destination for apparel and textile products, the EU has always been very clear about the need to improve working standards and safety in this sector.
The statement said occupational safety and health is a core element of the Decent Work agenda that the EU, along with other partners, have been supporting through concrete projects including one which directly targets working conditions in factories in the garments sector.
"We stand ready to support all efforts by Bangladesh to raise standards in the industry," the statement added.
