Dhaka, Bangladesh (BBN)-Justice Altamas Kabir, former Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of India, will arrive in Bangladesh on a four-day visit from April 23. 

He will deliver his speech as the convocation speaker at Shanto Marium University’s first convocation to be held on April 23, 2014, said a press release of Indian High Commission. 

During his stay in Dhaka, Justice Kabir will call on Justice Md Muzammel Hossain, Hon’ble Chief Justice of the Supreme Court in Bangladesh.

He will also deliver a public lecture on a topic titled “Access to Justice for All” at the Daily Star Centre at 4:00pm on April 24.

Born in Calcutta on July 19, 1948, Justice Kabir is the son of Late Jehangir Kabir, who along with his brother, late Professor Humayun Kabir were closely involved in India’s independence struggle.

Justice Kabir completed his schooling from Calcutta Boys’ School and graduated in History from the Presidency College. Thereafter, he completed his Post-graduate studies in Modern History and a simultaneous LLB degree from Calcutta University.

Justice Kabir commenced legal practice in 1973.

Making the Calcutta High Court his base he appeared in the Trial Courts, both Civil and Criminal, and Tribunals where he acquired experience in procedural law.

He was elevated as a Judge of the Calcutta High Court on August 6, 1990.

In 2004, Justice Kabir was made the Acting Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court and was subsequently appointed as the Chief Justice of the Jharkhand High Court on March 1, 2005.

Within six months he was elevated as a Judge of the Supreme Court and on September 29, 2012, Justice Kabir was sworn in as the 39th Chief Justice of India.

After demitting office on July 18, 2013 Justice Kabir returned to Kolkata, where he now resides.
