Dhaka, Bangladesh (BBN)– Finance Minister AMA Muhith has laid emphasis on bringing uniformity of standard in the country’s statistical system, saying that such uniformity is very important for proper planning and development.
“We must have a uniformity of standard as statistical data is very important for the economy as well as planning and development,” he said while addressing the certificate giving ceremony of a training program in the capital Dhaka on Saturday.
Organized jointly by the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS) and Economic Research Group (ERG), officials from BBS, Bangladesh Bank and Centre for Policy Dialogue (CPD) took part in the training program on “National Income Accounting: Theory and Practice”.
Planning Minister AK Khandker attended the ceremony as special guest while Riti Ibrahim, secretary of statistics and informatics division of the planning ministry, presided over it.
Speaking at the ceremony as the chief guest, the finance minister said questions are often raised about the present GDP calculation method as such calculation is being carried out following a very old system.
“GDP calculation method is terribly underestimated,” he added.
About the national income accounting, he said the government will bring change in the system from the next year.
AK Khandker said the training program was organized with a view to improving the professional skills and efficiency of the officials of BBS and other organizations.
He urged the participants to apply their knowledge and skills for the development of the country.
