Dhaka, Bangladesh (BBN)– A five-member team was formed to probe into the fire incident in the Bangladesh Steel and Engineering Corporation (BSEC) building at Karwan Bazar in Dhaka on Friday.

The committee has been asked to submit the probe report by seven working days, officials said.

“We have already formed a five-member probe team headed by deputy director
Mizanur Rahman to find out the cause behind the fire,” Director (operation) of Fire Brigade and Civil Defence Major Md Mahbub told local media.

The other members of the committee are deputy assistant director Masudur Rahman Akand, senior station master of Tejgaon Fire Station Tanharul Islam, its warehouse inspector and station master of Mohammadpur Police Station.

The fire broke out in the daily Amar Desh office housed on the top floor of 11-storied building around 11:48 am and twenty one fire fighting units doused the blaze around 1.58 pm.

None was however hurt in the incident, fire brigade sources confirmed.

The officials of Amar Desh said they smell a rat behind the fire at the BSEC building that gutted the media’s online office at Kawran Bazar on the day.

“We want to state clearly that this was not a fire under normal circumstances, this is a mysterious fire” said Syed Abdal Ahmed, executive editor of the media house, at a press briefing.

He also said: “We could not pay the rent for our online office. Yesterday (Thursday) we cleared our dues. Today we were moving to a new office to run the online section in full flow. Our hopes were raised.”

Khirul Anwar Mukul, head of ntv news, claimed that the fire originated from Amar Desh office. “Our employees managed to get away into safety.”

A devastating fire broke out at the same building on 26 February, 2007 which totally destroyed a satellite TV station located there.
