Last updated: August 25, 2024

Dhaka, Bangladesh (BBN) - The government has implemented a comprehensive plan to ensure that flood victims can swiftly return to normalcy, announced Chief Adviser Dr Muhammad Yunus during his address to the nation today.

"We have ensured all measures for the fast recovery of flood victims through government and private institutions," he stated, addressing the recent floods that have devastated large parts of the country, leading to significant loss of life and property.

Dr Yunus also emphasized the government's commitment to both immediate relief and long-term solutions.

"We have started discussions regarding the prevention of future flood situations with our neighboring countries," he added.

The Chief Adviser urged national unity, stressing the importance of cooperation at both domestic and regional levels to effectively tackle such crises. "We are one family. We have one goal," he declared, calling on the nation to support the government's efforts wholeheartedly.

As of now, the floods have marooned around 51 lakh people, with the death toll standing at 18, a number expected to rise.

The floods have affected 10 lakh families across 73 upazilas in 11 districts, including Feni, Cumilla, Chattogram, and Sylhet.

Approximately 4,15,273 people have sought refuge in 3,654 shelter centers, along with 22,298 domestic animals.

The government has deployed 748 medical teams and allocated significant resources, including Tk 3.52 crore, 20,650 tonnes of rice, and 15,000 packages of dry food, baby food and fodder to the affected districts.

Private organizations, businesses, and the public have also contributed to the relief efforts.

Deputy commissioners in the flood-affected areas have been instructed to coordinate with various stakeholders, including the coordinator of the anti-discrimination student movement, the army, navy, medical teams and other volunteers.

Dr Yunus further said, "The country, which was achieved through the sacrifice of so many after the Liberation War, was destroyed due to fascism and dictatorship.

"Corruption has entered every sphere of the countries' institutions."

During his speech to the nation, Dr Yunus assured that the government would bear the full cost of treatment for those injured during the violence surrounding the recent Anti-Discrimination Student Movement protests.

He also assured a fair investigation into the violence and tragic events surrounding the student protest.

"This process of investigation will start this week. The first UN team has already arrived," he said.

He also announced plans to establish a 'July Mass Killing Memorial Foundation' to commemorate the tragic events.

Addressing the countrymen’s concerns about the upcoming elections, Dr Yunus stated, "That is a political decision, not solely ours."

Since assuming power on August 8, following the resignation of Sheikh Hasina, Dr Yunus has focused on tackling corruption and major reforms in all public institutions of the country.

Several top officials from the previous government have been arrested on charges of corruption, reflecting the interim government's commitment to restoring integrity in public institutions.
