Dhaka, Bangladesh (BBN) – Foreign Advisor of Bangladesh caretaker government Dr. Iftekhar Ahmed Chowdhury has said as a source of pride for the nation Bangladesh is consistently playing the role of a major global peacekeeper on behalf of the United Nations.

He made this observation to the media after a series of meetings with top three UN officials in New York on Thursday, according to reports.

The foreign advisor held meetings with the Under Secretary General of the Department of Peace Keeping Operations Alain Le Roy, Under Secretary General of the Department of Field Support Susana Malcorra and Under Secretary General of Management Angela Kane.

“Apart from presence of troops and formed police units in every major operations, we also now have two command positions in Liberia and Georgia. Ours is a contribution which has been appreciated by every senior official at the UN I have spoken to, and I have spoken to many,” the foreign advisor said.

Besides, peace-keeping, there are three other important current issues that Bangladesh is providing leadership and these are climate change adaptation, food security and problems of least developed countries, Dr. Chowdhury added.

“The international community sees such roles as extremely positive and constructive and such perceptions heighten the nation’s global profile and image,” the adviser noted.

“Multilateral diplomacy is an important component of our foreign policy, and the goodwill that we create thereby increases international support and understanding for Bangladesh which is helpful domestically for our progress and development,” he added.
