Dhaka, Bangladesh (BBN)– Law enforcers released former Dhaka City Corporation (DCC) Mayor Sadeque Hossain Khoka about half an hour after picking him up from Dhaka District Judge’s Court premises on Sunday.

The detention came minutes into a clash between a group of pro-BNP lawyers and police began on the court premises around the noon.

Mr. Khoka was leading a procession of the pro-BNP lawyers on the court premises and police intercepted them when they were trying to go out the court campus around 11:50am, triggering the clash, according to reports.

He unofficially resigned on November 28 from his post of DCC mayor and vowed to continue movement against Dhaka split as a citizen of the city.

On November 30, Mr. Khoka filed a writ petition challenging the legality of the bill that legalized the split of Dhaka into two parts.

Parliament passed Local Government (City Corporation) Act (Amendment) Bill 2011 on November 29 to divide DCC into North and South parts.
