Dhaka, Bangladesh (BBN)– Activists of Jamaat-e-Islami and its student wing, Islami Chhatra Shibir, torched four buses and vandalized 35 other vehicles in different parts of the capital on Sunday ahead of opposition-called 48-hour countrywide shutdown.

Violence was reported from Purana Paltan, Naya Paltan, Motijheel, Malibagh, Farmgate, Khilgaon, Gulshan, Khilkhet and Old Dhaka areas since the afternoon.

The buses were torched in Purana Paltan, Naya Paltan, Malibagh and Farmgate areas, the Daily Star, a local newspaper, reported.

The Jamaat-Shibir men unleashed the violence in support of their 48-hour hartal and demanding release of Eahsan Mahbub Jubair, ameer of Sylhet city unit of Jamaat, who was arrested early Sunday from a hotel in Uttara for what police said “involvement in conspiracy against the government”.

Police also arrested a Shibir man from Gulshan-1 area on charge of creating anarchy in the locality, said Rafiqul Islam, officer-in-charge (OC) of Gulshan Police Station.
