Dhaka, Bangladesh (BBN) – A new schedule for the parliamentary election would be announced on Sunday, Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Dr Shamsul Huda said in Dhaka on Saturday.

“It’s almost certain that the national election won’t be held on December 18,” the CSE told reporters after a meeting with the Awami League-led grand alliance at the Election Commission (EC) Secretariat in Dhaka on Saturday evening.

Asked what would be the election date in that case, Mr. Huda replied it might be any day between December 27 and 29.

On Friday, the CEC had the first meeting with the BNP-led four-party alliance on the rescheduling of the elections as the dialogue reopened to resolve the latest sticking-points in the run-up to the long-stalled polls.

Earlier, Awami League Acting General Secretary Syed Ashraful Islam, who led the seven-member alliance team, said, “We’ll give our reaction once the commission takes the decision.”

He said it is the caretaker government, EC and the BNP-Jamaat alliance who are mainly concerned with rescheduling of the polls.
