Rangoon, Burma (BBN)- United Nations Special Envoy Ibrahim Gambari arrived in Rangoon on Friday to prepare for a possible visit of the UN chief in the next month.

Mr Gambari was to fly to the country’s administrative capital, Naypyidaw, after arriving in Rangoon on the day and met with Foreign Minister Nyan Win. Details of the meeting were not immediately available.

But it is not clear if the UN envoy will meet with detained democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi, who is now on trial for violating the terms of her house arrest.

After his two-day trip, Mr. Gambari will brief Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon before the UN chief decides whether to visit Burma, officially kaniwn as Myanmar.

The Nigerian diplomat is on his eighth visit to the military-ruled country since he was appointed as the special envoy to Burma in 2006.
