Dhaka, Bangladesh (BBN) - At least seven people were killed in a devastating fire at a readymade garment (RMG) factory at Sreepur, on the outskirts of the capital Dhaka, Tuesday night, police said.

“Seven bodies had been recovered after a hectic search of the fire-ravaged building,” local police chief Amir Hossain said, adding that all seven bodies have been identified and handed over to their relatives.

He also said a seven-member body has been formed to investigate into the incident of fire that raged through Aswad Composite Mills, a sister concern of Pall-Mall Group at Sreepur upazila (sub-district) under Gazipur district.

The probe body has been asked to submit its report within seven working days, a local government official said.

More than 50 people were also injured in the fire that originated around 6:00pm in the dyeing section of the two-storey apparel factory.

Ten fire fighting units have managed to douse the fire early Wednesday, after long 10 hours’ of frantic efforts.

The fire occurred at a time when the country is still reeling from the deadly Rana Plaza building collapse on April 24 at Savar, where 1,132 garment workers were killed and the Tazreen Fashions fire at Ashulia that left 112 workers killed on November 24 last year.
