Rio De Janeiro, Brazil (BBN)–  Germany progressed to a record fourth successive World Cup semi-final as Mats Hummels' first-half goal was enough to knock France out.

Defender Hummels outmuscled Raphael Varane to head in from Toni Kroos's early free-kick.

Goalkeeper Manuel Neuer denied Mathieu Valbuena's drive before Karim Benzema's shot was blocked as France pushed, the BBC reported.

Germany's Andre Schurrle fired weakly at Hugo Lloris before Neuer palmed away Benzema's drive to secure the win.

Joachim Low's side will play the winner of Friday's other quarter-final between hosts Brazil and Colombia for a place in the final.
