Dhaka, Bangladesh (BBN)- The government has confirmed the first swine flu death there. The victim was a 37-year-old woman, officials said on Monday.

“A swine flu infected patient died on Sunday night at a private hospital in Dhaka,” Head of the country’s Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control and Research (IEDCR) under the Health Ministry Mahmudur Rahman said, adding: “This is the first recorded swine flu death in Bangladesh.”

Mita, wife of Taposh Chakraborty, was admitted to the hospital on Aug. 18 with fever, Media Coordinator of the Lab Aid Hospital Mesbah Aajad told BBN in Dhaka, adding that she had died at around 10.30 p.m. (local time) on Sunday night.

Mita was admitted to local hospital at Savar under Dhaka district on Aug. 16 with suspected dengue fever, but when it was clear her symptoms did not match dengue, and might be swine flu, she was transferred to Lab Aid Hospital in Dhaka.
