Dhaka, Bangladesh (BBN)- The government will sign contracts with different companies to set up 25 new power plants within next six months aiming to meet the increasing electricity demand in the country.

The decision was taken at the cabinet meeting, held at Bangladesh Secretariat on Monday with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the chair.

PM’s press secretary Abul Kalam Azad said after the meeting that construction work of 27 power plants has already started.

The power division, in a summary on power situation, informed the cabinet that step was taken to produce additional 1000 to 1200 megawatt electricity by December 2010.
