The interim government of Bangladesh is considering the abolition of the August 15 public holiday, disclosed the sources within the Ministry of Public Administration on Tuesday.
The sources, who requested anonymity, indicated that a circular to cancel the holiday has already been drafted and is awaiting approval from President Mohammed Shahabuddin.
The cancellation of this holiday, traditionally observed as National Mourning Day since 2008 under the recently ousted Awami League government led by Sheikh Hasina, has fueled intense speculation.
The move is expected to be officially confirmed once the president issues the necessary order.
This development follows closely on the heels of the Nobel laureate Dr Muhammad Yunus assuming leadership of the interim government on August 8.
Dr Yunus's government took office following the resignation and subsequent escape of Sheikh Hasina on August 5.
The prospect of abolishing the holiday has ignited widespread debate across the nation, as the new administration begins to implement its agenda.
