Dhaka, Bangladesh (BBN) - Grameenphone (GP) has assured its agitating employees of stopping job cut right now.
The cellophane operator, however, on Monday reportedly said the company would take decision on job slashing in accordance with the business need in future.
The GP’s assurance came after several hundred officials of the operator under the banner of Grameenphone Employees Association laid a siege to its head office placing a six-point demand, including stoppage of retrenchment on Sunday.
After two and a half hours discussion with the agitators, the GP authority agreed to lift the entry restriction of the officials upon whom the notice of termination by July 31 was earlier served.
The agitators said almost 1,000 employees are working at the 'distribution and retail sale department' of the company across the country. Of them, 350 officials were served with notice for termination in last few months. Already 242 had been terminated and 108 are in the process of retrenchment.
The GP will pay standard compensation package to the employees against 'hazardous jobs', Chief Corporate Communications Affairs officer of GP Tahmid Azizul Huq was quoted by the Financial Express (FE), a local news paper, as saying.
Agitating GP official SM Saiduzzaman said that they are not happy with the response from the company management.
