Hall-Mark closes apparel factories for three days

Last updated: October 16, 2012
Dhaka, Bangladesh (BBN)- Hall-Mark Group on Monday closed all its factories for the next three days, as its workers demonstrated demanding arrears ahead of Eid-ul-Azha, police officials said.
Tens of thousands of workers of the factories, owned by the controversial business group, were staging demonstrations over that demand for the last several days as their wages and other form of payments had become uncertain following the arrest of the top officials in connection with Sonali Bank loan scam.
The protesters claimed that they were not paid for the last one month after the much-talked-about loan forgery, causing worries among the workers. Dozens of people, mostly workers, were injured during sporadic clashes with police Sunday last.
Hall-Mark Group's Managing Director Tanvir Mahmud and its General Manager Tusher Ahmed were arrested on October 4 in connection with 11 cases filed by Anti-Corruption Commission on charge of embezzling BDT 15.68 billion from Ruposhi Bangla branch of the Sonali Bank Limited.
