Hefajat threatens with daylong hartal Thursday

Last updated: November 24, 2014

Dhaka, Bangladesh (BBN)-Hefajat-e Islam and an alliance of different Islamic parties have threatened the government with imposing a countrywide daylong hartal for Thursday if sacked posts, telecommunications and information technology minister Abdul Latif Siddique is not arrested by Wednesday.
The fresh hartal call came Monday, a day after the minister returned home from India.
He came under fire after making "derogatory" comments about Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's son Sajeeb Wazed Joy, hajj, Tablighi Jamaat and journalists in New York on September 28.
As the consequence of his comments, Siddique was removed from cabinet and from the Awami League's presidium, the highest policy-making forum of the party on October 12.
