Dhaka, Bangladesh (BBN) – The High Court suspended the broadcasting of Somoy TV, a private television channel, for next seven days from today.
The suspension order on the dissemination of the Somoy TV programmes came following a High Court hearing on a writ petition.
Shampa Rahman, a director of the Somoy TV Ltd, filed a writ petition with the High Court seeking necessary directives stating that the Somoy TV was used as the mouthpiece of the recently ousted government led-by prime minister Sheikh Hasina.
A HC bench comprising of Justice Naima Haider and Justice Shashanka Shekhar Sarkar passed the directive asking the authorities concerned to suspend the broadcasting of the Somoy TV.
In the petition, it is stated that the Somoy TV was used as ‘a mouthpiece of the previous government’.
She prayed to the HC to take necessary steps so that the private television channel runs neutrally.
The HC also issued a rule asking the legality of the broadcasting of the television channel on behalf of the Awami League-led government, the High Court sources added.
After passing the directives, the court decided to hear the rule after seven days.
