Dhaka, Bangladesh (BBN)- At least five apparel workers were hospitalized and 12 others were receiving treatment after falling sick during the third day of a hunger strike to realize their unpaid wages plus bonuses in the capital Dhaka on Wednesday.
More than 1200 workers of four garment factories of Tuba Group started a ‘fast unto death’ programme on Monday, the eve of the Eid festival, demanding payment of three months’ wages and festival bonus at Badda area in Dhaka.
At least 20 workers fell sick on the day. Among them, five were admitted to Moghbazar Community hospital in Dhaka, while 12 others were under treatment receiving intravenous saline at the site of the unprecedented occupation, the workers said.
The garment factories are Tuba Fashions, Bukshan Garments, Tuba Textiles and Mita Design.
The Tuba Group failed to pay the dues and festival allowances to its 1,500 employees.
Owner of Tuba Group Delwar Hossain is currently in jail in connection with the Tazreen Fashions fire incident that killed 112 workers in November, 2012.
