Imran Khan demands early elections in Pakistan

Last updated: June 21, 2012
Islamabad, Pakistan (BBN)- Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan said the disqualification of former Prime Minister Gilani was a victory for the constitution and law.
The problem would not be solved with a new prime minister and early elections were the only solution, Mr. Khan said while speaking at a press conference on Wednesday.
He said that the new prime minister will have to write a letter to the Swiss authorities to reopen money laundering case against President Asif Ali Zardari.
The PTI chief also announced that his party would launch a protest movement against inflation and load-shedding from Faisalabad on June 27.
He said the judiciary had fulfilled its obligation by ensuring the supremacy of law.
Mr. Khan earlier had welcomed judgment of the Supreme Court disqualifying Yousuf Raza Gilani as prime minister.
He had described apex court’s judgment on Tuesday as “historic because it has demarcated limits of judicial and parliamentary authority. It will set a precedent that once superior judiciary has convicted someone, no non judicial forum can hold otherwise.
