India swine flu death toll rises to 17

New Delhi, India (BBN)- India confirmed six more deaths on Wednesday caused by the deadly influenza A (H1N1) virus, taking the total swine flu deaths to 17, the health officials confirmed.

Five people in the country’s western city, Pune and one in Nasik under Maharashtra died of the deadly disease on Wednesday, according to a health ministry press statement.

Besides, a 33 year old male from Trivandrum who travelled from Andaman and Nicobar Islands via Chennai was admitted to Kerala Institute of Medical Sciences died on Tuesday.

In Pune, one 25 year old case was admitted on Aug.6 at the identified health facility and died of complications on Aug.11, the statement added.

India reported its first swine flu death on Aug. 3 after a 14-year-old girl student in Pune died from the disease. A 53-year-old woman was the second victim in Mumbai and died on Aug. 8.
