New Delhi, India (BBN)– The number of telephone subscribers in India recorded a 3.5 percent growth in December 2009 to 562.21 million from 543.20 million in the previous month, officials said on Wednesday.

Wireless subscriber base increased from 506.04 Million in November 2009 to 525.15 Million in December at a monthly growth rate of 3.78 percent, a Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) press statement said.  

The country’s overall Tele-density reaches 47.89 while Wireless Tele-density stands at 44.73.

On the other hand, wireline subscriber base declined from 37.16 million in November 2009 to 37.06 million in the previous month.

State-run telecom operators Bhartiya Sanchar Nigam Limited and Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited, holding 85.22 percent of the wireline market share, lost 0.12 million subscribers in December, according to the official statistics. Overall wireline tele-density is 3.16 percent.

Total broadband subscriber base now grew 3.56 percent to 7.83 million in December over the previous month’s figure of 7.57 million, the TRAI added.
