Dhaka, Bangladesh (BBN)– Professor Tapan Kumar Saha of Chemistry Department was made Proctor of Jahangirnagar University (JU) on Tuesday.
The university authorities appointed Dr Saha as Proctor of the university for two-year term, a JU announcement said.
Earlier, ex Proctor of the JU, Professor Arzu Miah, resigned in the wake of strong demand from general students and teachers for his removal.
He tendered his resignation to JU Vice-Chancellor Prof Shariff Enamul Kabir on Monday.
On January 9, massive protests erupted on the campus after Zubair Ahmed, a student of the English department, succumbed to his injuries.
Students and a section of teachers took to the streets with a set of demands, including the removal of the proctor and his associates, and punishment of the killers.
The crisis further intensified as a faction of teachers of JU on January 12 announced a boycott of all academic activities demanding the removal of Arzu after he allegedly assaulted his colleague Professor AA Mamun, President of Jahangirnagar University Teachers’ Association, at a meeting of the association called to scrutinize the JU administration’s role during and after the attack on Zubair.
