Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh (BBN)– Four people, including a minor boy, were killed and over 150 others injured in sporadic clashes between the Jamaat-Shibir activists and police in the district town on Friday afternoon, police said.

Local administration meanwhile imposed Section 144 in Rumaliachhara, Tarabaniachhara and Hakimia Madrasa areas in the town for an indefinite period, Jasimuddin, officer-in-charge of Cox’s Bazar Sadar Model Police Station, said.

Two of the Shibir activists are Siddique, 22, and Faruk, 20. Identities of the others could not be known immediately, Jasimuddin said adding that Babul Akter, additional superintendent of police of Cox’s Bazar, was also injured during the clash.

Witnesses said hundreds of activists of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and its student wing Islami Chhatra Shibir brought out a procession at Rumaliachhara at about 2:00 pm.

However, police intercepted the procession and charged baton on the Jamaat-Shibir men to disperse them.

The Jamaat-Shibir men pelted the law enforcers with brickbats, triggering a clash.

Chases and counter chases took place during the sporadic clashes. At one stage, police opened fire on the Jamaat-Shibir activists, leaving four people killed on the spot and over 150 injured, including eight of them with bullets.

Additional forces of police have been deployed in the town to avert any untoward incident, the police official said.
