Dhaka, Bangladesh (BBN) – Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami will enforce countrywide dawn-to-dusk general strike on Monday to protest the deaths of three activists of Shibir, the party’s student wing, during a clash between Jamaat-Shibir men and police in Cox’s Bazar on Friday.

Jamaat acting secretary general Rafiqul Islam Khan on Friday night told reporters about the party’s decision to enforce the shutdown that also meant for registering their other demands.

Besides, the party also declared to enforce a 48-hour strike in Cox’s Bazar from Saturday protesting the deaths, the party’s statement said.

In an earlier press release sent to media offices, the party said it will stage a countrywide demonstration on Monday to press its various demands, including dismantling of the war crimes tribunals and releasing the party’s top leaders facing war crimes charges.

Three Shibir activists were killed and 50 others injured during a gun battle between Jamaat-Shibir men and police in Cox’s Bazar.

Following the gunfight, local administration imposed Section 144 in Rumaliachhara, Tarabaniachhara and Hakimia Madrasa areas in the town for an indefinite period to stave off further trouble.
