Malaysia to hire 5,000 fishermen from Bangladesh

Last updated: September 23, 2010

Dhaka, Bangladesh (BBN) - Malaysia offers to recruit some 6,000 Bangladeshi fishermen for its growing fisheries sector, officials said.

It would be the first time Bangladesh sent fishery workers to Malaysia since Kuala Lumpur cancelled visas of 55,000 Bangladeshi jobseekers in early 2009, citing global economic slowdown.

The workers would be hired to work in trawlers to catch fish in the sea, a senior official, adding that Bangladeshi fishermen, mainly those from the coastal zones, can easily be made aptly skilled and professional in the trade.
