Dhaka, Bangladesh (BBN)- The government has decided to appoint Foreign Secretary Mohamed Mijarul Quayes as the next High Commissioner of Bangladesh to the United Kingdom, a foreign ministry announcement said on Sunday. 
A career diplomat, Mr. Quayes has been serving as the Foreign Secretary since 8 July 2009. 
In his distinguished diplomatic career, Mohamed Mijarul Quayes has served as the Bangladesh High Commissioner to the Republic of Maldives and the Ambassador of Bangladesh to the Russian Federation. 
He was concurrently accredited as Ambassador to Belarus, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Ukraine. He has also served in various diplomatic capacities in Bangladesh Missions in Tokyo, Geneva and Singapore. At Headquarters, he has headed several desks as Director-General, including SAARC, South-east Asia, Economic Affairs, External Publicity and UNCLOS.
Mr. Quayes obtained a Bachelor’s degree in Liberal Arts from Dhaka University and a Master in Public Administration degree from Harvard Kennedy School of Government (USA). At the Kennedy School, he was an Edward S. Mason Fellow in Public Policy and Management. 
In his professional career, Mr. Quayes has represented Bangladesh in numerous regional, international and UN meetings and conferences. He has also been actively involved in the drafting of several human rights related global instruments. 
He has recently been elected as a member of the International Civil Service Commission (ICSC) and has previously served as an expert member on the former UN Human Rights Commission’s Working Group on Migrants and Human Rights.
Mohamed Mijarul Quayes is a distinguished man of letters with cross-disciplinary interests. He is an avid connoisseur of the arts, and writes and speaks on the visual arts, theatre and film, as well as on aesthetics. 
Mr. Quayes is a Life Member of the UN Association of Bangladesh and the Bangla Academy. He is also a member of the Board of Trustees of the Bishwo Shahitto Kendro (World Literature Centre) and is a close associate of Magsaysay Award winning academic Prof. Abdullah Abu Sayeed.
He is married to Naeema C. Quayes, and has two daughters.
