Last updated: August 28, 2011

Dhaka, Bangladesh (BBN)- Bangladesh has no shortage of food grains as around 1.4 million tons of food grains are in the stocks, Food and Disaster Management Minister Abdur Razzaque has said.

Dr Razzaque was talking to reporters while visiting an Open Market Sale (OMS) centre at Boubazar in the capital Dhaka on Saturday.

The minister also said 500000 metric tons of food grains collected from local sources and import would also be in the stocks.

The OMS program was started in December last year and under it rice is being distributed at Taka 24 among the poor people in the capital and divisional headquarters.

The food minister contradicted with the price hike of essentials in local markers saying economy of the country could easily be figured out with the low price of rice.

There is no shortfall of rice and flour (ata) in the country, he added.
