Deals with China a turning point for Bangladesh
Proper implementation of the agreements signed between Bangladesh and China will open a new horizon in the economy, business leaders and economists said. The visit of Chinese President Xi Jinping yielded the signing of 27 deals, where Bangladesh will receive $24.45 billion in assistance from China. Thirteen Bangladeshi entities also signed 13 joint venture agreements with the same number of Chinese companies involving $13.6 billion, to boost trade between the two nations.

Pilot tests on new VAT law prove successful
Government's revenue authority is conducting mock execution of a new VAT law that provides for controversial online payment of the tax at a flat rate of 15 per cent for all -- be they big or small. Officials said a set of pilot tests, as prelude to enforcement of the VAT and Supplementary Duty Act 2012 from next year, had been run to see impact of the law on businesses and field-level tax officials.

Kathmandu, Dhaka ‘agree’ to set up 1,500MW hydropower plant in Nepal
Bangladesh and Nepal have agreed to set up a hydropower plant in Nepal with a capacity of 1,500 megawatt, agreement for which would be signed soon, said commerce minister Tofail Ahmed on Sunday ‘We have agreed to jointly produce hydropower in Nepal and to supply the electricity to Bangladesh,’ Tofail told reporters following a meeting with the commerce minister of Nepal, Romi Gauchan Thakali, at the Bangladesh Secretariat in Dhaka.

World Bank president now in Bangladesh
World Bank Group President Jim Yong Kim arrived in the capital Dhaka Sunday afternoon to see firsthand the progress Bangladesh has made in transitioning to a lower-middle income country, despite development challenges. Finance Minister AMA Muhith received him at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in the city while Economic Relations Division (ERD) Secretary Mohammad Mejbahuddin and Bangladesh’s Alternative Executive Director to World Bank headquarters Mohammad Mosharraf Hossain Bhuiyan were present.

Bangladesh’s stocks open week on positive note
Bangladesh’s stocks finished marginally higher on Sunday, the opening day of the week as some optimistic investors took position on some large-cap stocks. After witnessing volatility in the first hour of trading, rest of the session went up steadily, ultimately closed marginally higher. At the end of the session, DSEX, the prime index of the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE), finished at 4,709.63 points, advancing 8.31 points or 0.18 percent over the previous session.

Govt looks to buy Chevron assets
The government intends to initiate discussions with US-based oil major Chevron this week to buy its Bangladesh assets, reports UNB. The company has been asking for $2.0 billion from the international buyers, according Bloomberg report.

Radiant to build second LPG vessel for Omera
Radiant Shipyard -- the manufacturer of the country's first liquefied petroleum gas carrier, Omera Princess -- has won a contract to construct a second vessel for Omera Petroleum. The keel laying ceremony, which marks the beginning of construction of the vessel, Omera King, took place last week at the premises of Radiant Shipyard in Rupganj, Narayanganj.

Bangladesh’s banks asked to install auto-alarm for ensuring safety
The central bank of Bangladesh has asked all banks to ensure safety of their branches by installing auto-alarm system as an instant precautionary measure. “We’ve issued the directive in line with the ministry of home affairs,” a senior of the Bangladesh Bank (BB), the country’s central bank, told BBN in Dhaka. He also said such measures will help the banks to ensure safety of their branches across the country.
