Expert suggests Ctg port takeover by int'l operators
The management of the country's main sea port Chittagong should be handed over to an international port management entity to increase its efficiency, an international expert has said. Similar approach should be adopted in handling air cargo as well as building of warehouse facilities at the land port, the expert noted.
Trade deficit rises 12pc in July
Trade deficit jumped 12.14 percent in July in continuation of the trend seen throughout last fiscal year on the back of higher import payments against slow exports. The gap stood at $1.17 billion in the first month of the current fiscal year, up from $1.04 billion in July last year, according to the latest data from the central bank.
MNP service fee hiked to Tk 50
The government has facilitated charging a customer Tk 50, up Tk 20 on the initially planned tariff, by mobile number portability service provider Infozillion Teletech BD against its service. Infozillion Teletech will get the opportunity of charging higher as the government recently withdrew the specification of Tk 30 as mobile number portability fee for the customers under the amended MNP licensing guidelines, sources said.
BSEC extends mutual funds by 10 years
The Bangladesh Securities and Exchange Commission (BSEC) has extended the closed-end mutual funds by 10 years. The commission extended the tenure of 30 mutual funds which are scheduled to be wound up or be made open-end funds by 2023 on the advice from the ministry.
Robi set to transfer 20pc stake to edotco at $120m
Mobile operator Robi is set to offload its 20 per cent stake valued at US$120 million to edotco Bangladesh, a Malaysia-based telecommunications infrastructure services company. Bangladesh's second largest mobile phone operator has taken the latest initiative to facilitate edotco Bangladesh Co. Ltd. (edotco BD) for complying with the rules to be eligible for the license of tower company which will operate mobile towers across the country.
Pollution the killer
Bangladesh saw around 234,000 deaths, including 80,000 in urban areas, due to environmental pollution and related health risks in 2015, making it one of the worst affected countries in the world, reveals a World Bank report. The number was more than 10 times that of deaths the same year from road accidents, which was 21,286, it pointed out.
Banks allowed to appoint additional auditors outside BB panel for export subsidy issues
Bangladesh Bank on Sunday announced that it would allow banks to appoint auditors not registered with the central bank for quick completion of auditing of the export-subsidy issues of apparel and other sectors. The BB issued a circular in this regard stating that the banks would be allowed to appoint auditors from the BB-approved auditors’ panel like the previous years for issues involving cash subsidy or incentives for the year 2018-2019.
Tofail: Bangladesh is very very good place for investment
Commerce Minister Tofail Ahmed yesterday said Bangladesh is a very good place for investment as the government provides many incentives. “For the development, continuity of government is crucial as we can see from the past 10 years. Bangladesh is very very good place for investment and attractive to foreign investors. We are offering a better policy support, where a foreigner can repatriate 100% of his profits,” the minister said.
