BSFIC to import 50,000 tons of sugar
Bangladesh Sugar and Food Industry Corporation (BSFIC) is going to import more than 50,000 tons of sugar to meet the deficit in the market, officials said. The Cabinet Committee on Public Procurement’s meeting approved the Ministry of Industry’s proposal on Wednesday to import the sugar; the meeting was presided over by Finance Minister AMA Muhith.
HC on Basic Bank Scam: ACC lacks neutrality in probe
The High Court yesterday severely rebuked the Anti-Corruption Commission for foot dragging and showing weaknesses in investigating cases over the BASIC Bank loan scam. The commission lacks neutrality, transparency and competence in dealing with the cases, the court said, adding that the ACC is applying the “pick and choose” policy as "it keeps detaining and releasing people" in connection with the cases.
Govt honours 658 taxpayers as countrywide tax fair ends
The government honoured 658 taxpayers across the country in recognition of their praiseworthy payment of income tax for the tax year 2016-17. Of the taxpayers, 141 received tax cards under 36 categories at a function Wednesday after the conclusion of a countrywide tax fair the outcome of which the revenue authority billed encouraging.
Bangladesh Bank sells $25m more to three banks
The central bank of Bangladesh has sold US$ 25 million more to three commercial banks directly to meet the growing demand for the greenback in the market. “We’ve sold the US currency to the banks at market rate on Wednesday to settle their import payment obligations,” a senior official of the Bangladesh Bank (BB), the country’s central bank, told BBN in Dhaka.
Bangladesh needs $928b extra to implement SDGs
Bangladesh requires $928.48 billion additionally from 2017 to 2030 to implement the Sustainable Development Goals, revealed a new study. This amount would be needed after current costs related to the SDGs are borne by the public and private sectors and external sources. The $928.48 billion is 19.75 percent of the accumulated gross domestic product under the Seventh Five-Year Plan, according to the report titled “SDGs Financing Strategy: Bangladesh Perspective”.
BPC, Navy ink deal to build first jet fuel supply pipeline
The state-run Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation (BPC) signed a deal with Bangladesh Navy on Wednesday to build the country's first oil-carrying pipeline by November 2018 at a cost of Tk 1.83 billion. The proposed 16-kilometre (km) underground pipeline with eight-inch diameter will carry jet fuel from Pitloganj of Narayanganj to Kurmitola Aviation Depot (KAD) of Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (HSIA), a senior BPC official said.
Corporate tax may be revised after next election: Muhith
Finance minister AMA Muhith on Wednesday said that revising of the corporate tax rate might be possible for after the next general election. He came up with the remark while addressing a panel discussion organised by Bangladesh Association of Publicly Listed Companies on ‘Raising awareness on various aspects of the Capital Market’ at Bangabandhu International Conference Centre in the city.
