LPG use jumps four-fold in three years
Consumption of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) in the country has witnessed a stunning four-fold growth over the past three years, as more and more households, commercial entities and vehicles are opting for it. Around 1.0 million tonnes of LPG are likely to be consumed in the current calendar year 2018, up from around 250,000 tonnes in 2015, deputy secretary of the Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Akramuzzamn told the FE on Saturday.
Economists slam govt for approving so many banks
Economists on Saturday criticised the government for giving approval to so many banks in the country and said that governance in the financial sector was at stake. It was very unusual that country’s banking sector was at the mercy of the government, they made the comment at while addressing the launch of a book ‘Towards an Inclusive Green Bangladesh’ by Atiur Rahman, former Bangladesh Bank governor, at Pathak Shamabesh Centre in the city.
AnonTex riding on BB favours
Bangladesh Bank has given AnonTex, which took more than Tk 5,500 crore from Janata Bank through serious irregularities, a controversial permission to take more loans from other state-owned banks as well, reschedule its loans and valuate its assets afresh to make it look like a healthy company.
Bangladesh export earnings to India see 142% growth
Bangladesh’s exports to India have seen a sharp rise by 142% to $375 million in the first quarter of the current fiscal year, thanks to duty free market access. The earnings were $155 million in the same period last year, according to the data of Export Promotion Bureau (EPB). The apparel sector alone fetched $145.10 million, or nearly 35% of total export earnings. Knitwear products contributed $37.76 million, while woven items earned the remaining $107.35 million.
48-hr transport strike begins on Sunday in Bangladesh
Bangladesh’s transport workers are set to enforce a 48-hour strike from Sunday morning to press for a set of demands, including an amendment to the Road Transport Act (RTA) 2018. Bangladesh Road Transport Workers Federation made the announcement at a rally outside the National Press Club in Dhaka on Saturday.
LankaBangla suffers huge loss
LankaBangla Finance posted negative earnings per share in the third quarter of 2018 after suffering huge losses in its operation in the capital market. The company's consolidated EPS was Tk 0.24 in the negative for the July-September period, down from Tk 0.90 in the same quarter previous year.
Assoc wants AD duty on China, Malaysia television panels
An association of local electrical goods and home appliance makers has requested Bangladesh Tariff Commission to take steps to impose anti-dumping duties on import of television panels and some electric products from countries like China and Malaysia. BTC has asked the Bangladesh Electrical, Electronics and Home Appliances Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BEEMEA) to provide more details on its claim about dumping of the products, said officials of the commission.
