Dhaka, Bangladesh (BBN) - Bangladesh government and the International Labour Organisation (ILO) are going to launch a new programme worth more than 24m to improve working conditions in the ready-made garment (RMG) sector in Bangladesh.
A signing ceremony is scheduled to be held tomorrow (Oct 22) in the capital Dhaka between the government and the ILO representatives, officials said.
“We’ll collect the fund from the donors to implement three-and-a-half year project,” an ILO spokesperson told BBN in Dhaka today (Oct 21).
He also said the project will focus on improving RMG factory building safety and workers’ rights and conditions in Bangladesh.
“The fund will be used for improving efficiency of the RMG factory inspectors through providing training to them,” the ILO official said.
The ILO also said: “It will build on work already underway in the country since the Tazreen factory fire in 2012 and Rana Plaza building collapse almost six months ago in which over 1,100 workers lost their lives.”
Three donors – the Netherlands government, the Canadian government and the Department for International Development (DFID) of the British government – will donate the proposed fund through the ILO, a government official said.
