Dhaka, Bangladesh (BBN)– Activities at major garment producing have been apparently unaffected by a strike called by protesting Tuba Group workers at all ready-made garment (RMG) factories across the country.

The productions were going on as usual at factories in different areas including Savar, Narayanganj, Gazipur and Chittagong on Saturday with no untoward incident reported until noon, police and apparel markers confirmed.

“Workers of all RMG factories have joined their works as per regular schedule. The call of strike failed to attract workers of other factories as the Tuba Group Sramik Sangram Parishad called it to press-home their five-point demand, which did not include any general issue,” a senior official of the BGMEA said quoting its monitoring report.

Operations were going on normally at every garment factories in Savar, Gazipur, Narayanganj and Chittagong, police said.

Tuba Group Shramik Sangram Committee, a temporary platform of labour rights organisations, earlier called a strike in the country’s apparel industries for Saturday demanding salaries for three months and Eid bonuses.

Tuba Group workers and labour leaders on Friday formed a human chain demanding salaries for the month of July including bonuses. They also demanded cancellation of bail of Tuba Group’s owner, Delwar Hossain.

A total of 1,475 workers so far received wage arrears of two months (May and June) from the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters’ Association (BGMEA) on Thursday, the second day of payment. Tuba Group’s total employee count stood at 1,495 in May and 1,458 in June, the BGMEA said.
