New Delhi, India (BBN)-While many of us fix up salon appointments to rid ourselves of black heads that are clearly visible, sneaky white heads are more difficult to remove.
For the uninitiated: “White heads or closed comedones occur due to accumulation of sebum and oil inside the pore of skin, leading to formation of acne,” says cosmetologist and dermatologist Nandini Baruah, reports the Hindustan Times.
In simpler terms: “White heads are basically ‘first type of acne’ or symptoms of acne. These occur when oil gets collected in pores,” describes dermatologist Madhuri Agarwal.

WHAT NOT TO DO
Constantly touching the affected area with the hands, or trying to pop white heads only adds to the ailment.
The problem is very common in the facial T-zone (the forehead, nose and chin), and with the nip in the air, it’s vital to be season-smart. “In winter, skin gets dry, so many of us use cold creams which further block skin pores, making it sticky.
Consult an expert and use the right kind of moisturiser,” adds Madhuri.
FIXING THE ISSUE
Besides consulting a dermat, experts also suggests a proper skin care routine.
“Frequent cleansing of face and application of creams such as benzoyl peroxide and retinoids helps. Sometimes, blocked pores can be opened with the comedone extractor under a dermatologist’s guidance. In winter, the routine of cleansing, toning and moisturising should be followed religiously.
Sunscreen application in the day is a must. Oily, spicy food is to be avoided, and plenty of water intake is a must.
Hormonal factors like PCOD should be ruled out in excessive cases of white heads and acne,” adds Nandini Baruah.
