Dhaka, Bangladesh (BBN)– Sammilito Ulama-Mashayekh Parishad on Saturday  postponed its countrywide dawn-to-dusk general strike, popularly known as  hartal  for December 26 after fruitful negotiations with the government.
“We’ve postponed the hartal on the basis of the discussions with the government and its assurance to address our demands in phases and considering the celebration of Christmas, the biggest religious festival of the Christians,” Islami Oikya Jote Secretary General Abdul Latif Nizami reportedly told a press briefing held at the Jatiya Press Club in Dhaka.
On December 8 this year, Olama-Mashayekh Parishad called for countrywide hartal on Sunday protesting some provisions in the new education policy. The main opposition BNP on the next day lent its support to the programme.
